Samiri IV

by Mantash

2020 — Dieng, Wonosobo, Indonesia.

Mantash is a black metal act from Indonesia whose album Samiri was recorded analog, live, and in a haunted building known as the Morbid Altar—perched on the highest village in Java. The band’s ethos is ritual, not replication; rawness over polish; atmosphere over virtuosity.

Their philosophy leans into semiotic darkness, cosmic chaos, and the honesty of presence. As they put it:

“Black Metal isn’t about skill. It’s about purpose, honesty, and conjuring the dead.”

Role

  • Shot full music video on location using handheld + atmospheric lensing techniques
  • Sourced visual themes from Indonesian spiritual-mystical rituals (klenik & trance traditions)
  • Performed full edit using cutting-by-rhythm approach to sync visual hallucination with sonic chaos

Style & Visual Language

  • Visual tone: feverish, obscure, fog-drenched
  • Influences: Dziga Vertov x Carl Theodor Dreyer x Nusantara mysticism
  • Color grade: de-saturated, shadow-heavy, with infrared bleeding in dream sequences
  • Pacing: no fixed tempo, cut based on energy spikes within drum patterns & vocal howls
  • Imagery: ritual masks, fog in mountain temples, intercut trance dancers & ancient symbols
  • Structure: Non-linear, broken time, resembling spiritual possession footage more than standard MV

Sound & Synchronization

  • Synced edits not to BPM but to emotional volatility
  • Used raw audio waveforms to identify “violence peaks” for rhythmic montage
  • No transitions—only ruptures, jumps, and ritualistic cuts

Tools & Techniques

  • Shot with mirrorless full-frame (low-light config)
  • Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro + After Effects for glitch overlays
  • Color grading with DaVinci Resolve (custom LUTs for analog rot)
  • No stabilization. No CGI. All shake and blur is intentional & sacred.

“This wasn’t about shooting a band. It was about documenting a fever, a trance-state. I didn’t use a camera—I used a talisman. The edit was not about ‘narrative’. It was about ‘summoning.’”
